Goal Setting For Mom Made Simple

Everyone has goals. You have goals, don’t you? Not everyone knows how to make them happen though besides wishful thinking. Maybe you’ve got an idea of how to turn your goals into actions to achieve them, but have you done it? If the answer is yes, power to you! If the answer is no, then I am here to give you several tips to turn those goals into action and graduate you from a wishful thinker to a goal getter! Woohoo! Now my biggest piece of advice for you to remember is, your goals won’t work if you don’t work. Get to work on your goals and don’t quit!

As a mom we have goals, we have dreams and we have aspirations we strive to achieve that most likely have been put on the back burner. Our little humans have become our entire world and it is easy to lose sight of things we once thought were so important and what we used to yearn for. Are you thinking to yourself right now, “yes girl!” Trust me I would be too reading this. It is SO EASY to put ourselves last on the list and I am oh so guilty of it. I constantly must remind myself (and I totally go back and read my own posts somedays for a pick me up on those off days) NOT to put myself on my own backburner and I do deserve everything I want out of life. My post on a Postpartum present to yourself is so clutch on this topic of doing things for yourself. What I am going to go over with you is getting those goals back into your conscious mind as a mom. Setting you up with tools to put your plans into actions and conquering what you want. Before we had our kiddos, it was easy to set ourselves up to say and do as we pleased. Now we must make a conscious effort to do anything for ourselves, like put makeup on or something besides pjs/workout clothes. I KNOW I’m not the only one lol!

Let’s go over some examples of things we may want as a mom or as a woman. Fitness I bet is on top of a bunch of your lists, it is on mine!! My fitness journey has been anything but easy and I love to workout. I always have enjoyed it in some fashion and it has killed me not being able to just jump into a gym or go for a run! AHH! Not only because of not getting the time, but physically it has been a journey. My body didn’t go back to alignment the way it was supposed to, and I have been working on just getting in my best condition to start over in the fitness world. Staying optimistic on this journey isn’t always easy, but it is a must. Five and a half months after having Michael I was finally able to jog about a quarter mile! I was so excited! Being able to jog a short distance (shortest distance ever lol) was a small goal I had set for myself and FINALLY made it after 5 ½ months! It took me that long just to jog a small amount! Plans change decisions don’t. My plan was to be able to run and lift again by 6 months. Clearly, those plans changed as with life and unforeseen obstacles but my decision to get back at it hasn’t! Taking baby steps to get back into fitness was key for me. Doing daily stretches, and small amounts of rebuilding muscle weekly has gotten me to be able to jog that short distance without complications. This may seem insignificant to some, but I know I will never forget that moment of accomplishment! My tip to you when making your goals first and foremost is make a decision to take action. Like I said, plans change decisions don’t! My plans changed, my decision didn’t. The decision to persevere through obstacles got me to my first goal.

Decide to take action towards your goals.

You have your goals set, right? First set some goals you want to accomplish in the next year. Next step is to look at the actions that need to take place in order to get you there. A big goal needs small goals to make it happen and those small goals need even smaller goals. Something mathematically easy to break down is a goal to make 100 thousand dollars in 1 year. This is a great goal! Making 6 figures is a pretty common goal and I’ve seen it written down numerous times on goal sheets. Do you know what it takes to make 6 figures in one year? If you write the goal down and wish for it to happen, odds are you will not be making 100 thousand dollars in the next year. You need to break it down monthly, weekly, and daily to get you there. To achieve 100k in one year working 5 days a week, you need to make $416 a day. Rounded up you are making 52 dollars an hour, $2,083 a week, and $8,333 a month. These are the numbers you need to reach in order to make $100k. Comprehend?

Big goal: Make 100 thousand dollars in 1 year

Smaller goals to get you to your big goal:

Monthly goal- make at least $8,333

Weekly goal- $2,083

Daily goal- $416

You MUST break your big goals down into smaller obtainable goals that will equal you getting to your big goal.

As a mom I know it is easier said than done. Maybe you plan your day to go something like this: You plan to get up at a reasonable time, get a morning workout in and cook breakfast. Yea go getter! Then reality hits, baby decides to wake up every hour and a half through the night and will only sleep in bed with you. You’re left exhausted, too tired to put normal clothes on and breakfast…what’s that? Sound familiar? Yea, goals go straight to the back burner…again. Been there, mom life! Lol. Guess what? These days are going to happen, and they are going to knock us down, this is called an obstacle. Chug some coffee and get your butt into at least some workout clothes. On days like these, I’ll do something simple like taking a light walk for 20-30 minutes outside. Fresh air is so important for you and for baby! Get them good feels endorphins flowing!

Chores is something that seems to own us, don’t they?! When Michael was first born, and we were readjusting our lives and daily routines I always felt like I was trying to play catch up with everything, exhausting! What I have found to help keep us on track is breaking down our weekly goals into doing one or two things daily. Example of my weekly chore list:

·         Sunday: Laundry Day and meal prep

·         Monday: Dust

·         Tuesday: Vacuum and Swiffer floors

·         Wednesday: Meal prep and clean bathrooms, maybe do laundry

·         Thursday: Clean bottles and baby dishes

·         Friday: break day or any small tasks around the house

·         Saturday: same as Friday

As you can see above I break  down most things we need to get done to keep the house functioning and clean. You have to plan your own success. We as mothers don’t get the time we really need to properly function (which is why we work off coffee and wine lol. Coffee for energy and wine for sanity). Be proactive about getting what you want done.

You have all your goals written down. The best thing as a mom I can suggest to you is focus on 1-3 BIG goals to accomplish for the year. We are already spread out so thin, adding any more to our plate our head might literally fall off. No one needs that. A few of my BIG goals I am focusing on are fitness, finances and becoming a better version of myself. Those are the 3 MAIN things for 2018 I am zoning in on. I have other smaller goals I can accomplish quarterly on my goal list, but after writing down everything I want to accomplish these were the 3 I chose to bring attention to. For you, after writing down your goals decide on 2-3 you want to focus your attention on and get after them!

All moms wear a superwoman cape, it is what we are designed for, being superwoman! We give all of our focus, attention, energy, life sources to our families and what is left of us…who am I kidding what is left?! No but really, with what is left in us after absolute exhaustion we MUST focus our attention to getting things done we want. Even if it is as simple as learning to cook (or hard). Whatever your goals are write them down. Decide to take action on them. Implement smaller goals that lead you to achieving your big goals. Don’t quit on the hard days. BAMM! Simple recipe for a goal getter! You may be reading this and thinking “its easy for her to say”. No. No it is not. We can cut the crap out and be real. Most days I don’t want to get out of bed. Most days the struggle to put on pants is real. Most days I don’t want to cook, play, clean, or be any kind of active. But I do it anyways…most days. Decide to do it for yourself. In doing it for yourself, you are doing it for your family. Ways to change any stinking thinking I go over in my Daily Habits to get you feeling good about the new year. Check it out and get your mind right. I hope as a mom I can help get you off to a NEW YOU in the NEW YEAR! Even if you make the choice to start over or start goal planning in April.
